About

Karen Sperling is the original Painter expert. She has been writing about and teaching Painter longer than anyone. She demo’d Painter when it debuted at Boston Macworld in August 1991 after having written the first Painter manual. She went on to write the manuals for the next several versions of Painter and wrote several published Painter books, including her latest one, Painting for Photographers.
Her latest title is the new Painting for Photographers DVD Volume 1: Portraits, in which movies show Karen painting step-by-step a photo by renowned photographer Phillip Stewart Charis. The DVD also has movies for using, creating and editing Image Hose nozzles, which paint with multiple images like flowers, useful for creating unique portrait backgrounds.
Karen traditionally published the first printed Painter magazine called Artistry magazine. She currently publishes the first Painter ezine, Artistry Tips and Tricks, containing step-by-step Painter tutorials, in addition to her Artistry tutorials on CDs and as downloadable files. Karen’s Painter tutorials have appeared in many publications including SBS Design, PEI magazine, Professional Photographers magazine and Rangefinder.
Karen is a featured columnist for Professional Photographer and is a Painter Master listed at Corel’s web site.
Karen has taught and demo’d Painter for nearly 20 years all over the United States at just about every venue there is, including the national Professional Photographers of America (PPA) convention, local PPA affiliates and PPA schools; WPPI; American Film Institute; Macworld; Seybold; and SIGGRAPH. She has taught at many companies and schools, including Disney, American Greetings and the New School for Social Research in New York. She currently teaches Painter at her Artistry Painting for Photographers Retreats.
Karen’s commissioned portraits and paintings are held in private collections around the world. Her abstract art was in two recent shows in New York, including a group show at Monkdogz Urban Art gallery in the prestigious Chelsea section, and has been exhibited during Art Basel Miami.
